About: The son of an underground filmmaker, Robert Downey Jr. was born in New York City on April 4, 1965. His first film role was as a puppy in his father's film Pound (1970).After a series of memorable supporting roles -- including one in Weird Science (1985) -- Downey joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" for one season. Soon, he moved to Hollywood and landed the title role in director James Toback's The Pick-Up Artist (1987). His role as a drug addict that same year in Less Than Zero eerily foreshadowed Downey's personal demons that would haunt him later in life. With great ease, Downey manages to move from comedic roles (Soapdish, Home for the Holidays and Wonder Boys) to dramas (Short Cuts and The Gingerbread Man) to the outright bizarre (Natural Born Killers and Gothika). He earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for a note-perfect portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in 1992's Chaplin. Sixteen years later, he got his second Oscar nod for his role playing a black man in the comedy Tropic Thunder.
