About: Born August 20, 1956, in Rochelle, Ill., Joan Allen launched her acting career with Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1977, later moving to New York. She won a Tony Award in 1987 for her Broadway debut in "Burn This."Allen shifted her talents to the screen in such films as Manhunter (1986) and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). She caught critics' attention in 1995's Nixon, playing First Lady Pat Nixon, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. The following year, she was nominated in the same category for The Crucible.Her resume grew with varied work in Face/Off (1997), The Ice Storm (1997), Pleasantville (1999) and The Contender, for which Allen received her first Best Actress Oscar nod. Allen divides her time between bigger Hollywood fare, such as The Notebook (2004) and The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and smaller films, such as The Upside of Anger (2005).
