About: A former amateur boxer turned character actor, Ray Winstone was born in Hackney, England, on Feb. 19, 1957. After turning in a critically acclaimed performance in the prison drama Scum (1979), the young Winstone seemed poised for great things. But he spent the next part of his career working largely in obscurity.Good roles were so scarce, in fact, that Winstone considered leaving the profession altogether in the 1980s. But a breakthrough role in a friend's stage play, "Mr. Thomas," kept him afloat and nudged his career in a whole new direction. Both Nil by Mouth (1997) and Sexy Beast (2001) helped cement Winstone's reputation as a respected actor with a knack for creating complex characters.Other notable films include King Arthur (2004), The Departed (2006) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).
