About: To honor the 100th anniversary of motion pictures, 40 international directors create their own mini-movies in this French documentary. The weapon of choice for each is a replica of the camera used by the pioneer Lumiere brothers in 1895; each short is a single take running just under a minute (the limit of one roll of film at the time). Spike Lee, Zhang Yimou, David Lynch and Wim Wenders are among those taking part in this unique experiment.

About: Directed by Ismail Merchant (of the famed Merchant-Ivory team) and set in 1950s India, this film tells the story of a British woman (Greta Scacchi) who gives birth but can't nurse the baby. The woman's nurse -- the half-English, half-Indian "Cotton" Mary (Madhur Jaffrey) -- enlists her handicapped sister (Neena Gupta) to serve as the baby's wet nurse while she takes credit for its care, wheedling her way into the baby's posh British household.

About: In director Ismail Merchant's homage to a nearly extinct language, milquetoast professor Deven (Om Puri) is elated to land an assignment profiling the great Urdu poet Nur (Shashi Kapoor) for a scholarly journal. But when they meet, a dismayed Deven finds that Nur is hardly the man of his repute -- awash in liquor and lamenting his artistic decay to a bunch of sad-sack groupies. Puri and Kapoor deliver superb performances in this engaging opus.
