She graduated with a BFA in theater from Southern Methodist University and made a brief film debut in Taking Off (1971).Bates excelled in theater while making occasional films in the 1970s and '80s; the female lead in the play "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune" was written for her, but the film version role went to Michelle Pfeiffer.
